On August 20, 2017, the “2017 National Water Quality Safety and Chlorine Dioxide Application Technology Seminar” was successfully held at the Yuehai Hotel in Huangdao District, Qingdao.

The conference was hosted by the Chlorine Dioxide Professional Committee of the National Chemical Standard Substances Committee, the Science and Technology Committee of the China Urban Water Supply and Drainage Association, and the China Chlorine Dioxide Society. It received strong support from the Qingdao Urban Water Supply, Drainage, and Water Conservation Association, as well as the Qingdao West Coast Public Utilities Group Water Co., Ltd. Nearly 200 representatives attended the meeting, including urban water supply companies, chlorine dioxide equipment and preparation manufacturers, universities, research institutions, and government agencies from across the country.  

 

Professor He Qihuan, a key contributor to the formulation of GB26366-2010 “Hygienic Standard for Chlorine Dioxide Disinfectants”, mentioned at the conference that the “Disinfection Technical Specification” (2002 edition) had been in use for 15 years and could no longer accommodate the current diversity and complexity of disinfectant products. He emphasized the necessity and urgency of revising the specification, stating that it should be a top priority for health authorities.

Shandong Huashi Pharmaceutical proposed that the revised standard should not target a specific product type but should encompass all forms of chlorine dioxide disinfectants, making it a universal national standard that highlights authority, inclusivity, and rigor. Additionally, it should not be limited to hygienic standards but should also include clauses related to product specifications. Therefore, we suggested naming it GB26388 “National Standard for Chlorine Dioxide Disinfectants”.

Dr. Wu Mingsong, Secretary-General of the Chlorine Dioxide Professional Committee of the National Chemical Standard Substances Committee, pointed out during the meeting that chlorine dioxide and sodium hypochlorite are the two most widely used chlorine-based alternatives in the upgrading and renovation of urban drinking water plants. Statistics show that approximately 40% of urban drinking water plants in China currently use chlorine dioxide disinfectants. He believes that with the introduction of new products, processes, and standards, the application market for chlorine dioxide as a disinfectant will further expand.  

 

At the conclusion of the conference, the attendees summarized the current development status of the chlorine dioxide industry:  

- Promising future: Chlorine dioxide is increasingly recognized as a disinfectant and treatment agent with suitable oxidative capabilities.  

- Established regulations: Standards are becoming more comprehensive, covering nearly 20 areas, including analytical methods, water disinfection, surface disinfection, and food disinfection.  

- Opportunities: The industry is undergoing restructuring and has not yet become oversaturated.  

- Demand: Applications include water disinfection, reinjection water sterilization, epidemic prevention, surface disinfection, wastewater treatment, soil disinfection, livestock farming, air purification, and more.  

- Organizational support: Platform, intellectual, resource, and informational support are available.
